Some nostalgic memories to start your weekend…..

Memories …. of the way we were…. 

To all those who were born in the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s 

·         1st we survived with mothers who had no maids nor washing machines.  They cooked/cleaned while taking care of us at the same time. 

·         We took aspirin, candy floss, fizzy drinks, shaved ice with syrup (ice balls) & diabetes was rare. Salt added to coke was remedy for fever. 

·         We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets & when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. 

·         As children, we would ride with our parents on bicycles/motorcycles for 2 or 3.  richer ones in cars with no seal bets or air bags. 

·         Riding in the back of a private taxi was a special treat. 

·         We drank water from the tap & NOT from a bottle. 

·         We would spend hours in the fields under bright sunlight flying our kites, without worrying about UV rays which never seemed to affect us.

·         We went into the jungle to catch spiders without worries of aedes mosquitoes or perverts. 

·         With mere 5 pebbles (stones) which later progressed to miniature pillows filled with rice grains we would be involved in an endless game. With a ball (tennis ball or the small red “choping”  ball ) the boys would run like crazy for hours. 

·         We caught fighting fish/guppy in drains/canals & when it rained we swam there. 

·         We shared 1 soft drink with 4 friends from 1 bottle & NO ONE actually worried about being unhygienic. 

·         We ate salty, very sweet & oily food, candies, bread & real butter & drank very sweet soft drinks, sweet coffee/tea, ice kacang, but we weren’t overweight because ………. 

                        ……. WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING !! 

·         We would leave home in the morning & play all day, till streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day & we were o.k.

·         We would spend hours repairing our old bicycle & wooden scooter out of scraps & then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. 

·         We did not have playstations, nintendos, x-boxes, multiple channels on cable TV, DVD movies, no surround sound, no phones, no personal computers, no internet.  WE HAD FRIENDS & we went outside & found them! 

·         We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones & teeth & we still continued the stunts. 

·         We never had birthday parties till we were 21. 

·         We rode bikes or walked to our friends’ house & just yelled for them! 

·         The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law & school! 

·         Yet this generation has produced some of the best risk takers, problem solvers & inventors ever! 

·         In the past 40 years, we have seen an explosion of innovation & new ideas.

·         We had freedom, failure, success & responsibility & we learned …..
